Sounds do not necessarily need to be heard and can be experienced in alternative ways. My work explores that alternative way; the sense of touch. The experience of feeling the sound, in other words using one sense to experience the other. I feel that the sense of touch is what binds everyone irrespective of any disfunctionality. I had further realized this in my experience at ABSA (School for deaf and mute children) during the residency. I was very fascinated by the communicative skills those children had which lead me on to produce my work. It includes ‘voice boxes’, one titled ‘Can you feel me talking’, the sound of which can only be sensed by touching the box and is not directly heard. The vibration helps you decipher what the sound says.
