Shanzay Sabzwari

Karachi, Pakistan

Graduating with a BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS), Karachi, in 2014, Shanzay Subzwari’s work combines elements from Mughal miniature paintings, currency notes and popular culture to comment on politics, history, society and the human condition.

Selected exhibitions in Pakistan include: show at Taseer Art Gallery, Lahore, in 2017; ‘Excerpts’ by the Mandarjazail Collective at Koel Gallery, Karachi, in 2016; solo show at Sanat Gallery, Karachi, in 2016; two-person show at Sanat Gallery, Karachi, in 2015; group show at FOMMA in 2015; solo show ‘Hero Worship’ (tribute to cricket legends) at T2F, Karachi, in 2013.

Internationally, she has shown at the Moniker Art Fair, London, UK in 2016 and the Kesisme Municipality, Istanbul, Turkey in 2011, and her work is represented by GraFFik Gallery, London, UK. She was invited as ‘Watch and Talk’ participant at the Festival Belluard Bollwerk International, Fribourg, Switzerland, in June 2016.

Shanzay graduated from IVS with a Distinction in Dissertation, and the Sher Asfandyar Award for Academic Excellence in Fine Art. She has completed workshops on curatorial practices by Deborah Robinson (sponsored by the British Council), and has given lectures on art in various academic institutions. She currently writes art reviews and articles for various publications, as well as catalogue essays for the galleries. She lives and works in Karachi.
