The Art of Reconstruction

Workshop for Plastic Surgeons

February 9 – February 11, 2018

conducted by Michael Esson

Conducted by Professor Michael Esson, ‘The Art of Reconstruction’ was a three-day workshop for plastic surgeons. It was designed in order to assist the surgeons’ professional activities. Through drawing and the use of modelling disciplines, participants were introduced to formal aesthetic principles and strategies for dealing with interpretation of structure and spaces. Esson is an eminent figure inthe world of drawing, both as an academic and art practitioner. Esson was the Director at the International Drawing Research Initiative by the College of Fine Arts (COFA), Australia. He has also been affiliated with an Academy of Fine Art and Lincoln University. He has been qualified from the Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. Michael Esson has conducted workshops for plastic surgeons across Australia, the USA, Turkey, China and many more countries. The three-day workshop brought together 16 doctors from various medical institutions in an effort to improve their understanding of the detailed anatomy of the human body. The first day of the workshop began with moulding facial features with clay through the use of references and models provided through Esson. These individual studies progressed towards drawing elements of the face. On the second day, the participants focused on two-dimensional drawings in an attempt to understand contouring and visual observation. The workshop concluded on the third day after a rigorous activity of building a skull and forming it into a head by using a fellow participant’s face as the real-life reference. These modelling exercises helped demonstrate one’s perception of space and details around the human organs. Emphasis was spent on observing negative spaces and perceiving angles. This workshop was made possible with the generous support of the Sultan Mowjee Fund, along with the cooperation and efforts made by the Indus ValleySchool of Art and Architecture.
