Welcome to the 4th issue of VASL Newsletter Online!

This year took off with a packed schedule of events! Kristine Michael?s Educational Residency at the IVSAA in Karachi in January, followed by the International Artists? Workshop at Gadani!

Followed by the International Artists? Residency with 5 artists in March, together with a three-week outreach program with Awena Cozannet at IVSAA Textile Department.

Gadani open day marked yet another major art event on the art calendar, which was attended by over 1000 people from Karachi, Balochistan and visitors from abroad.

The first VASL Residency in Lahore starts April, check out the dates below.

Please contact us to build your page on artists? pages on the VASL website on This will be an online database on contemporary artists in Pakistan. The VASL catalogue for 2004-05 is out and available at the galleries.

The newsletter is aimed primarily for a Pakistani audience, and lists contemporary art events and news in Pakistan. To brief our new subscribers, the newsletter lists Workshops / Residencies and funding opportunities that exist for Pakistani artists through VASL and the Triangle Network. The aim of the newsletter is also to serve as a platform for the practicing Pakistani artist to flash and share views. It is circulated on the web, free of cost and all items lead you to a relevant web page or contact by just a click on the active links below.

1. Jan van Eyck Academie call for applications

Artists, designers and theoreticians are invited to submit research and production proposals to become a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Candidates can either apply with a topic of their own or for a project formulated by the institute itself. In order to realise these projects, the Jan van Eyck offers the necessary made-to-measure artistic, technical and auxiliary preconditions.

2. Muslim Women Artists:"Call for Artworks", Asma Shikoh ex alumni IVSAA is in the process of putting together a proposal for a show in NY, and will be accepting images with statements of artworks from Pakistani women artists.For specifics on mailing please write to

3. Milano Film Festival, Milan, Italy.

The 11th edition of this festival will be held at the Piccolo Teatro and Castello Sforzesco on September 2006. The two International Competitions will be open to feature and short films of any genre, language, running time and format, provided that they are produced after January 1st 2005. 5. Khoj Workshop, India

International Artists? Workshop is scheduled to take place sometime in the next half of the year in Kolkatta.Khoj encourages international contacts for artists and facilitates experimental practice in their workshops.


6. P O S I + I V E, Suncity, South Africa open to works from artists in AIDS Awareness Art Exhibition ?Wall of Hope?.

Leading International and South African music, fashion and artistic talent will be coming together under the banner of P O S I + I V E, an unparalleled AIDS fundraising event taking place at Sun City from the 8th to the 11th June, 2006.

Vasl News


1.     VASL Lahore, International Artists? Residency, April 2006, Huma Mulji along with a new team begin with an International Artists? Residency. The working group members are Huma Mulji , Kaif Ghaznavi, Laila Rehman,Mariam Suhail, Masoomah Saeed, Mohammad Zeeshan, Nazish Ataullah, Saira Sheikh, Sara Salman and Umair Arif.

Begins from April 8th till May 7th with Artists? Talk on April 24th and Open Studios on May 7th.

The artists participating are Asma Mundrawala (Pakistan), Awenna Cozzanet (Lyon, France), Nilofar Akmut (Pakistan/ UK) and Shaharam Entekhabi (Iran/ Berlin)

2.  VASL International Artists? Residency, Five 6, was a five week long residency that culminated with an open day on the 4th of April 2006.Particiapting artists were Christina Mackie (UK), Ruby Chisti (Pakistan), Samuel Shi (Taiwan), Stephanie Dachary (France) and Waseem Ahmed (Pakistan).Look out for images and details coming on our website soon

3. Second VASL International Artists? Workshop at Gadani, 2006, was a big success and a hugely attended art event by all, along with students, artists and critics.For images and artist statements mailto:

4. Awena Cozannet in Residence, Awena conducted a three week long workshop with the textile students of the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.Awena is a sculptor and a performance artist from France also participating in the VASL Lahore International Artists? Residency, April-May 2006.

5. ?In Dialogue? with Christina Mackie, VASL in collaboration with the British Council Karachi, organized a two day outreach with the British artist in residence Christina Mackie. Final year students across art institutes from Karachi participated in the seminar and exchanged ideas on their work and art education. Christina also presented a slide-talk on the British Art Show 6 which she was a part of.

Artists in the network and beyond

1. Rashid Rana represents Pakistan on the international scene. His works are on show in the UK, Korea, Australia and Taiwan this season of 2006.

?         His video and prints are up at the Parallel Realities show, Blackburn Museum , UK. It?s a major exhibition brought from the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan in collaboration with C21 ? a year long cultural and community arts event in Blackburn with Darwen, Lancashire , UK. January 21 - April 9, 2006

?         Digital prints at the Bitmap: The first International Digital Photo Project: Loop Gallery, Korea

?         Video prints at the Mirror Worlds: New video art from Asia. Institute of the Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia 18 ? 15 April 2006

?         Nature Morte represents Rashid Rana at Art Taipei, Taiwan which is a brand new extension of Taipei Art Fair International and a major art event. 5  -  9 May, 2006

?         Rashid Rana?s work at the Christies Auction of Contemporary Asian Art, Hong Kong, the sale will be the first time that Christie's has sought to contextualize contemporary artists from the Subcontinent with their peers from China, Korea and Japan. May 2006

2.       Pakistani Popular Art Projects by Durriya Kazi in Japan and Melbourne 

?         Durriya Kazi curated the exhibition ?Lollywood! Pakistani Film Posters? in February for the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. It featured 102 hand painted film posters by artists such as Mustafa, Azad, S Khan and S Iqbal.

?         Kazi also contributed an essay on ?Concise History of Cinema in Pakistan? and presented a lecture on ?The Portrayal of Women in Pakistani Films" in March. The project is locally extended, through a workshop being conducted by the master painter S. Iqbal, with the Karachi University visual studies students and a film screening in April!

 3. Hamra Abbas at Gasworks UK, Berlin and Sydney

?         Hamra joins the Gasworks Studios UK from July to September 2006 and will also be participating in the Festival of Muslim Cultures in the UK.

?         Hamra?s one person show opens at Galerie Dorothia Konwiarz, Berlin on the 7th April 2006.

?         The 15th Biennale of Sydney features Hamra?s work in ?Zones of Contact? curated by Dr Charles Merewether starting 8th June 2006.

4. Naveid Iqbal at the Theertha International Artists? Workshop, Sirilanka.

Naveid is a miniature painter and an installation artist graduated from and teaching at Karachi University in Theertha International Artists? workshop Sirilanka.

5. Asadullah Asad at the Sutra International Artists? Redsidency, Nepal, Karachi based sculptor graduate of Karachi School of Art participating in a 5 week long residency in Nepal.

Pakistani Diaspora

1. Hamra Abbas and Ali Kazim with Green Cardamom, UK

After the success of the Karkhana project Hammad Nasar of the Green Cardamom arts organization puts together two new art events.Sacred Souls, Secret Lives?An exhibition of paintings by Ali Kazim.The Lightgallery, 5a Porchester Place, London W2 2BS.The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication with essays by Eddie Chambers and Aasim Akhtar.


Three month residency starting end June for Hamra Abbas with Gasworks, Victoria & Albert Museum and Green Cardamom.Hamra will have the opportunity to respond to the complete collection of the V&A and produce works that may form part of the exhibition "Beyond the Page: Contemporary Art from Pakistan" Asia House, London and Manchester.Art Gallery. Green Cardamom works collaboratively with galleries and museums, bringing artists' work to a global audience through exhibitions and publications.


2. Ruby Chishti at Vermont Studio Center, US

Chishti has received the full fellowship award from the Vermont Studio Center and will be beginning her month long residency on the 14th of May to 9th June. She plans to work with twigs as her main material which she began to work with at her VASL International Art Residency 2006.
