Educational Outreach 2003
International Arists' Residency 2004
As part of the Vasl educational outreach program, Gordon Cheung, initiated a workshop with Fine Art students from various art colleges in Karachi. Roohi Ahmed was interpreter and facilitator.
We invited 22, third year Fine Art students from four institutions to participate in this forum – Visual Studies Department of Karachi University, Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Central Institute of Arts and Crafts, Karachi School of Art.
The idea of the workshop was to involve the students into critical thinking by encouraging them to develop a positive critique of each other’s work. Paintings made by students were taken up one by one and every student had the opportunity to own the work of their colleagues. The purpose was to help them improve their quality of work through dialogue and a deep insight into the thinking process behind the artwork. This workshop took place at the Rangoonwala Centre on Monday 15th September.
This was followed by three days in Lahore with the NCA and SVA, where Gordon gave an intensive talk on his work, and related projects, and talked about his experience on the Vasl Residency. He also conducted a one-day workshop similar to the one held at VM Gallery for students at NCA.
The British Council, Karachi, supported this part of the outreach. Over the five-week period, all the artists visited and were part of a series of slide talks in the Visual Studies Department of Karachi University, and the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.
