About

Lower Dir Museum, also known as Dir Museum or Chakdara Museum, is an archaeological museum in Chakdara, Lower Dir. Established in 1979, it preserves material from a region that formed part of the historical area of Gandhara. Much of its collection comes from excavations carried out in the 1960s and 1970s by the University of Peshawar and the provincial archaeology authorities at Buddhist sites around Chakdara and the Swat River.

The museum is especially important for its collection of Gandharan Buddhist sculpture. Its galleries include statues of the Buddha and bodhisattvas, narrative relief panels, architectural fragments, reliquary objects, and scenes from the Buddha’s life and previous births. Because many of these works have a documented archaeological origin, they are particularly valuable for understanding how sculpture was placed and used within monasteries and stupas.

Alongside its archaeological material, the museum also preserves objects connected to the cultural life of Dir, including traditional dress, jewellery, weapons, household items, musical instruments, and carved woodwork. This combination of ancient art and ethnographic material gives the museum a wider regional focus. It connects the Buddhist heritage of Gandhara with the histories and living traditions of the communities of Lower Dir.
