About
Thar Museum Umerkot, also known as the Archaeological Museum Umerkot, is located within Umerkot Fort in Sindh. First inaugurated in 1968 and later expanded into a new museum building in 2006, it presents the history of Umerkot and the wider Tharparkar region through three galleries and two display lobbies.
The museum’s collection includes Mughal-period coins, old firearms, swords, armour, arrows, bows, helmets, manuscripts, paintings, royal documents, and calligraphic work. These objects reflect Umerkot’s position within the political and cultural history of Sindh, Rajasthan, and the Mughal world. The collection is particularly useful for understanding the region’s connections to courtly life, military history, manuscript culture, and changing systems of rule.
Photographic displays throughout the museum document the lives, landscapes, and communities of Tharparkar. This gives the museum a wider focus than the fort alone: it connects historical objects with the living culture of the desert region. For visitors, Thar Museum Umerkot offers a compact introduction to the material history of Umerkot and to the traditions that continue to define Thar today.
