Shaheen Jaffrani

Karachi, Pakistan

Shaheen Jaffrani is a visual artist and curator who graduated from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture obtaining her degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts, B.F.A (with Distinction) in 2014.

As a multidisciplinary and a research-based artist and curator, Jaffrani’s technical practice spans, to video, sculpture, ceramic, painting, installation and new media. The basis of her artistic practice revolves around the idea of decay in her native city of Karachi and how the psychological state of the city’s residents may be reflected in its architecture. It is the curious process of the subconscious mind that makes her question her surroundings and work with marks that take form over time in the urban landscape. Shaheen’s curatorial practice focuses on social change through art and cultural activism, civic engagement through public art, and advocacy, and progressive ideas through new media and technology. She intends to counter extremist narratives in society, through the arts by showing diverse and opposing perspectives.

Shaheen also has some experience in marketing and digital media, and she is part of several other social projects and collectives. Her curatorial practice was conducted under the PeaceNiche/T2F’s project of Faraar Gallery where she also spearheaded numerous other cultural programs. Jaffrani was also nominated by the U.S. Consulate as a highly competitive nominee for the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) in 2018.
