Ume Laila is a Lahore-based visual artist with a BFA from the College of Art and Design, University of the Punjab, Lahore (2016), and an MA in Visual Arts from the National College of Arts, Lahore (2021). Her multidisciplinary art practice focuses on exploring the architectural transition within cities, particularly the shift from traditional to modern styles and its societal impact.
Laila has showcased her work extensively all over Pakistan. She was part of the collateral exhibition of the Lahore Biennale 2020 and has served as ‘Artist in Residence’ at Karbath 01, Tasweer Ghar residency 2018, Vasl Taaza Tareen 14 in 2022, and New Narratives in Photography” residency project by Tasweer Ghar (Pakistan) and Grain (UK) as part of the British Council’s Arts Residency Grants Programme for 2023-2024. Her work displayed at Midland city center UK.
In 2023, Laila exhibited her work at Haam Gallery and Beaconhouse National University and curated the show “Teh-e-Harf” at the University of Lahore. Her video work, “Mukalma,” was published on The Aleph Review Magazine website. She also worked as the project coordinator for Art Lahore ’22. Currently she is teaching at University of Lahore and Lahore Grammar School.
