About

Chughtai Museum in Lahore is dedicated to the work of Abdur Rahman Chughtai, one of the foundational figures of modern art in Pakistan. The museum preserves paintings, drawings, prints, illustrated books, and archival material related to an artist whose work helped shape a distinctly South Asian modern visual language.

Chughtai’s paintings are recognised for their delicate line, subdued colour, and lyrical figures. He drew from Mughal and Persian miniature painting, Islamic ornament, Urdu poetry, and Art Nouveau, but developed a style that was neither a revival of the past nor a copy of European modernism. His work often returns to literary, historical, and romantic subjects, with figures and landscapes treated through an economy of detail and a strong sense of mood.

The museum also reflects Chughtai’s wider contribution as an illustrator and designer. His illustrated editions of Urdu poetry, including work connected to Ghalib and Iqbal, show how he brought painting, printmaking, and literature into close conversation. Maintained through the Chughtai Museum Trust, the museum is an important resource for understanding the early development of modern art in Pakistan and the lasting influence of Chughtai’s visual world.
