About
Shakir Ali Museum and Art Gallery in Lahore is the former home and studio of Shakir Ali (1916–1975), one of the central figures in the development of modern art education in Pakistan. Established after his death, the museum preserves his paintings, drawings, personal belongings, and the working environment in which he produced much of his later work.
Shakir Ali was a painter, teacher, and administrator whose influence extended well beyond his own practice. He taught at the Mayo School of Art and later became the first Pakistani principal of the National College of Arts. During his time there, he helped shift the institution towards a more modern approach to art education and influenced a generation of artists who went on to shape Pakistani art.
His work is often associated with abstraction and Cubist ideas, though it also draws on local forms, colour, and the experience of everyday life. The museum’s collection allows visitors to see both the finished paintings and the more personal side of his career: sketches, tools, furnishings, and the studio space itself. As a house museum and art gallery, it offers a direct link to an artist whose teaching and example had a lasting effect on Lahore’s art community.
